Academic Bonete

Bonete with golden pompon, golden application cord (piping) and golden lining
made as academic bonete for a Teresa of Ávila sculpture.

In Spain you often can see Teresa of Ávila wearing a black bonete:
The reason therfore is, that she was named in 1970 a Doctor of the Church by Pope Paul VI.

  1. Most depictions of her in biretta are pre-1970. From elsewhere on the web:

I believe that the University of Salamanca conferred upon her the academic degree Doctor Ecclesiae "honoris causa." I think that it may have even been conferred posthumously.
